The Aster Benkei represents the handsome American Moguls built by H.K. Porter & Co. for the Japanese Government Railways between 1880 and 1889. Originally operated on Hokkaido’s pioneering Horonai Railway, these locomotives played an important role in Japan’s early railway development and modernization.
 
Built in 1880, Benkei was one of the first locomotives of the class and is now preserved at the Railway Museum in Saitama. Closely related Porter Moguls also served frontier railroads in the American West, giving the design a special place in both Japanese and American railway history.
 
Aster’s finely crafted working live steam model captures the distinctive character and elegance of the original 2-6-0, making it an exceptional model for collectors of historic locomotives and Aster live steam.
